How to get promoted at work?

It is very interesting how promotions work at some companies. I always believe that people who get promoted are those who take pride in their work, people who are driven by genuine enthusiasm and desire to do their best no matter how big or small the job is, people who believe in themselves and their company, people who always go that extra mile and excel in every single situation, people who perform beyond and above all expectations, people who take upon themselves tasks and duties that are outside of their work description, people who are very appreciated and respected by the client and they peers, people who have great talent, skills and knowledge to perform superb job and always deliver excellent results, people who do more than necessary and volunteer for work and take initiative to make a job better, people how are already performing and doing work from that level up.

I also thought that people are judged by what they do at work, and not how much fun they have outside of work. For me, that is a talent, to be able to combine work with fun, to be able to achieve all of the above and still have time to enjoy life outside of work, travel and explore the beautiful things that this life has to offer. But no, I was totally wrong. Maybe it is just me.

Apparently, I learned recently, a person who is all of the above I just mentioned and manages to enjoy his life and have fun at work and outside of work cannot be promoted. A person has to be boring and have no life if he or she wants to get promoted. Is something wrong here or is it just me?

Shouldn’t we be judged by what and how we do at work and not how much fun we have outside of work? Shouldn’t be the right attitude to enjoy life and have fun? And by fun I mean basic things like traveling to great places that this beautiful Planet Earth has to offer, go to Broadways shows, concerts and theaters, visit museums, socialize with your friends and go to different places, skydiving, diving with sharks and be adventurous, have a great and positive attitude towards life, smile and be happy, go for movies, dance, learn new things, play sport, and do all of the exciting things that a person likes to do. Basically manage to do your work and deliver excellent results and still be able to do all those things we like to do.

We all have 24 hours a day and it is up to us how we spend those hours. Some people like to spend 10 hours at work and rest at home. Well, that is not me and will never be. Some people, like myself, spend 10 or more hours at work, and still manage to go for a movie, drinks or Broadway show afterwards. Is that wrong?

Sometimes I ask myself Why? Why do we spend so much time at work, care for the project and company like it was our own, and always want to impress and excel in every single situation when we never get awarded or promoted? Why? Why don’t we just meet the expectations and do what’s required? Well, it is just how some of us are, and no matter what, we still believe that one day somebody will recognize us and that we will get that promotion we think we deserve. Even if they don’t, we still continue excelling in everything we do just because we can and because it is important for us, for ourselves. Yes, sometimes we get disappointed in life, but we must turn those disappointments to our strengths and do our next task or job even better. Positive attitude is very important and to never ever give up. Let me finish this post by quoting Rocky Balboa [2006]

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward.”
